PROGRAM
One
Year Distance Learning Program
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
This is a
one-year distance learning program, which creates a balance
between the western scientific approach to the Study of Herbal
Medicine and the traditional North American model.
Students will learn how to assess herbal products, become
familiar with the efficacy and safe use of herbs in compliance
with industry and government regulations and consult with clients
in the workplace in a knowledgeable and professional manner. Enrollment of the program may begin at any
time.
WHO TAKES THE PROGRAM
Learn
how to Market Herbs for Industry.
This program is suitable for those working in health food stores,
herb shops, pharmacies, supermarkets, direct marketing or wherever
herbs are sold and in herbal product manufacturing or distributing.
This
program is designed for those employed or seeking employment
in the herbal industry to upgrade themselves to become competent
herbal consultants. This
program is also for those who have previously completed the
Chartered Herbalist Diploma Program or its equivalent or the
2 Canadian Health Food Association courses- Certified Natural
Product Advisor Course or Certified Sports Nutrition Advisor
and want to further their studies of herbal medicine.
The
student will become familiar with the efficient and safe use
of herbs in compliance with industry and government regulations.
ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
- Grade 12 high school
diploma or GED
- Verification of successful
completion of the following:
A)
Chartered
Herbalist Diploma Program- One-year distance learning program-
or its equivalent
B)
OR
Canadian Health Food Association – Certified Natural Product
Advisor
OR
Canadian Health Food
Association – Sports Nutrition Advisor

Verification of successful completion
of the Dominion Herbal College Prerequisite Chemistry Course
– 3 month distance learning or its equivalent

Annual International Herbal Seminar – valuable learning tool

COURSE INFORMATION
Students
will receive 4 modules of course material with lessons requiring
answers. Payment is
made for module 1 and course material is forwarded to student.
Upon completion of Module
1 student will order and
pay for Module 2 at which time course material is forwarded
to student. The same applies
to module 3 and 4.
Module
1: will contain the first 3 lessons of each subject listed in the curriculum.
(exception Botany 2 lessons & Herbarium)
Module 2:
will contain lessons 4,5, & 6 of each subject listed in
the curriculum.
Module 3:
will contain lessons 7,8 & 9 of each subject listed in the
curriculum.
Module 4: will
contain lesson 10,11 & 12 of each subject listed in the
curriculum.
All course material must be completed prior to attending the
5-day mandatory seminar
CURRICULUM
The following courses
will be taught in the Herbal Consulting Diploma Program.
BOTANY (2 lessons)
& HERBARIUM Instructions
An overview of morphology,
plant anatomy, histology of plant tissues and guidelines in
the preparation of a herbarium. To be completed during the program.
BIOCHEMISTRY – (12 lessons)
General principles of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
and its application to Human Physiology and Phytochemistry,
molecules, organization of the cell, pathways of metabolism,
energy-providing reactions, sources of energy and biosynthetic
pathways.
HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY
– (12 lessons)
History of herbal medicine,
the whole person and homeostasis, vitalism, health and disease,
essentials of health, rational therapy, herbal approach to treatment,
pain and its rational treatment, micro-organisms and disease,
the germ theory, poisonous and safe medicines.
MATERIA MEDICA – (12
lessons)
The study of a wide
range of herbs and their therapeutic applications for the assessment
and assistance of common ailments.
This course requires a previous knowledge of pathology,
which can be applied when formulating herbal formulae.
PATHOLOGY – (12
lessons)
A
basic course in Pathology which entails the study of the different
body systems in their diseased state.
In this course the student is going to study the most
basic and common disorders and diseases that plague our society
and some of their pathogenesis i.e. mechanism as to their causation.
PHARMACOKINETICS
/PHARMACOLOGY– (12 lessons)
Pharmacokinetics includes
absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of remedies. Principle components of plants. Remedies and their pharmacology for the urinary,
cardiovascular, digestive, respiratory, nervous, endocrine and
reproductive systems. The
skin, infectious conditions and tumours.
Allopathic remedies.
PHARMACY – (12 lessons)
Principles
and processes of preparing medicines from plant material. Methods of extraction of plants.
Pharmacopoeia preparations; liquid preparations for internal
and external use, solid preparations for internal and external
use. Dispensing, prescription writing and posology.
5 DAY IN CLASS HERBAL SEMINAR
This mandatory seminar is specifically designed for students
enrolled in the Herbal Consulting Diploma Program. Seminar application including dates will be forwarded to students
enrolled in the program.
The following topics will be covered during this 5-day
seminar.
Consulting
Learn how to consult with clients “over the counter” and privately
in an ethical, professional and legal manner. Setting up an herbal dispensary with case and
record keeping.
Practical
Pharmacy
This is a workshop where students can apply their knowledge
of herbal pharmacy and prepare medicines from plant material.
Therapeutics
and Case Studies
Students discuss case histories and management plans for some
of the most common illnesses.
Ethics
The code of ethics and rules of practice.
Marketing
& Business Practice
Marketing, accounting, licensing, pricing for services and
insurance.
Herb Identification
EXAMS:
Upon successful completion of all lessons for correction and
attendance of the 5-day mandatory seminar students are eligible
to write the final exams. Exams will be scheduled approximately
1-2 weeks following the seminar.
Examinations are to be taken in the following subjects: Pathology,
Materia Medica/Therapeutics and Pharmacology.
A
Diploma will be issued upon successful completion of all academic
and financial obligations to Dominion Herbal College.

the Clinical Herbal Therapy Diploma Program –3-year In Class.
