Pharmacokinetics; absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion
of remedies, Basic components; acids, alcohols, carbohydrates, gums
and mucilages, phenols, tannins, coumarins, anthraquinones, flavones
and derivatives, volatile oils, saponins, cardioactive and cyanogenic
glycosides and alkaloids. Remedies and their pharmacology for the
urinary system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, respiratory
system, nervous system, endocrine system, reproductive system, the
skin, infectious conditions and tumours. Allopathic remedies.
GYNAECOLOGY,
OBSTETRICS & PEDIATRICS
- 6 UNITS-PART 2
Review of the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive
system including circulation, innervation, hormones and structure.
Disorders of menstruation, the vagina, cervix and vulva including
herbal treatment. Chronic pelvic inflammation, tumours of the uterus
and ovaries, uterine displacement and prolapse, and suggested herbal
treatment. Obstetrics, circulation, elimination, psychological conditions
and diet during pregnancy. Common obstetric disorder. Herbs used
in pregnancy. Post-natal care and infant feeding. Childhood diseases,
symptoms and herbal treatment.
HERBAL PHARMACY

Basic principles and process of preparing medicines from plant material.
Methods of extraction of plants. Pharmacopoeia preparations, liquid
preparations for internal and external use, solid preparations for
internal and external use, semi-solid preparations for external
use. Dispensing, prescription writing and posology.
DERMATOLOGY
- 3 UNITS - PART 1
Skin structure and function, diagnostic features, eczema, dermatitis,
psoriasis, pityriasis, rosea, lichen planus, ichtyosis, autoimmune
conditions, infections, and infestations, acne vulgaris, acne rosacea,
urticaria, bullous disease and tumours. Disorders of hair, nails,
sweat glands and buccal cavity. Herbal remedies used in skin disorders.
FOURTH MODULE
DERMATOLOGY

& DIETETICS
- 6 UNITS - PART 2
Absorption and digestion, energy metabolism, proteins, carbohydrates,
fats, vitamin and minerals, their absorption, storage, regulation,
excretion, physiological effects, recommended
intake, deficiency and sources. Nutrition in illness; gastro-intestinal
disease, diabetes, anemia, coronary heart disease, hypertension,
thrombosis, renal disease, rheumatic and arthritic disease, gout,
skin disorders, mental illness and cancer. Food allergy.
MEDICAL
ETHICS & JURIS PRUDENCE
The Herbal Practitioner and the Law, Supply of Remedies. Code of
Ethics and Rules of Practice.
SEMINAR
- 5 DAYS
Lectures will place emphasis on the therapeutic approach towards
the patient and prescription writing. Reinforcement of subjects
covered in previews seminars will aim at preparing students for
the written and clinical examinations, discussing the finer points
concerning clinical assessment, differential assessment, therapeutics
and pharmacology.
WRITTEN
EXAMINATIONS
The three written examinations will be in Pharmacology, Materia
Medica and Therapeutics (including Applied Pharmacy).
CLINICAL
EXAMINATION
Upon attending the required 5 day seminar, successful completion
of examinations and completion of 150 clinic hours and clinic practicum
requirements, students are required to sit the final practical clinical
examination. The student must be familiar with the use of diagnostic
equipment and be able to perform a clinical examination of the patient
presented to them. Clinical skills and knowledge of differential
assessment will be expected. The student will be asked to give suitable
treatment plan with indications of the pharmacology involved, asked
to write a herbal formula and to accurately dispense herbal preparations.
