History of Herbal Medicine, the whole person and homeostasis, vitalism, health and disease, essentials of health, rational therapy, herbal approach to treatment, pain and its rational treatment, micro-organisms and disease, the germ theory, poisonous and safe medicines.


SECOND MODULE

HERBAL MATERIA MEDICA - 12 UNITS & MONOGRAPHS
Remedies grouped according to primary therapeutic action; stimulants, relaxants, astringents, depuratives, demulcent, antiseptics, diuretics, cardiovascular agents, diaphoretics, pulmonary agents, hepatic, cholagogues,gastro-intestinal agents and nervines.
PHARMACOLOGY - 6 UNITS - PART 1
Pharmacokinetics; absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of remedies, Basic components; acids, alcohols, carbohydrates, gums and mucilages, phenols, tannins, coumarins, anthraquinones, flavones and derivatives, volatile oils, saponins, cardioactive and cyanogenic glycosides and alkaloids. Remedies and their pharmacology for the urinary system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, respiratory system, nervous system, endocrine system, reproductive system, the skin, infectious conditions and tumours. Allopathic remedies.

GYNAECOLOGY, OBSTETRICS AND PAEDIATRICS - 6 UNITS -PART 1
Review of the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system including circulation, innervation, hormones and structure. Disorders of menstruation, the vagina, cervix and vulva including herbal treatment. Chronic pelvic inflammation, tumours of the uterus and ovaries, uterine displacement and prolapse, and suggested herbal treatment. Obstetrics, circulation, elimination, psychological conditions and diet during pregnancy. Common obstetric disorder. Herbs used in pregnancy. Post-natal care and infant feeding. Childhood diseases, symptoms and herbal treatment.

NUTRITION AND DIETETICS - 6 UNITS PART 1
Absorption and digestion, energy metabolism, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamin and minerals, their absorption, storage, regulation, excretion, physiological effects, recommended intake, deficiency and sources. Nutrition in illness; gastro-intestinal disease, diabetes, anaemia, coronary heart disease, hypertension, thrombosis, renal disease, rheumatic and arthritic disease, gout, skin disorders, mental illness and cancer. Food allergy.
