NUTRITION AND DIETETICS
Absorption and digestion, energy metabolism, proteins, carbohydrates,
fats, vitamins, their absorption, storage, regulation, excretion,
physiological effects, recommended intake, deficiency and sources.
Nutrition in illness; gastro-intestinal disease, diabetes, anaemia,
coronary heart disease, hypertension, thrombosis, renal disease,
rheumatic and arthritic disease, gout, skin disorders, mental illness
and cancer. Food allergy.
PHARMACOLOGY
Pharmacokinetics; absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion
of remedies, Basic components; acids, alcohols, carbohydrates, gums
and mucilages, phenols, tannins, coumarins, anthraquinones, flavones
and derivatives, volatile oils, saponins, cardioactive and cyanogenic
glycosides and alkaloids. Remedies and their pharmacology for the
urinary system, cardiovascular system, digestive system, respiratory
system, nervous system, endocrine system, reproductive system, the
skin, infectious conditions and tumours. Allopathic remedies.
GENERAL
MEDICINE
Genetic diseases (chromosomal disorders, unifactorial inheritance),
immunological diseases (allergy, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency),
nutritional diseases (protein malnutrition, water & minerals,
vitamins, obesity, climatic and environmental factors in disease
(disorders related to heat, cold & pollution), infections (viral,
bacterial fungal, protozoal, helminths, sexually transmitted), disturbances
in water, electroylte and acid-base balance (depletion & excess
of sodium, water & potassium, acidosis, alkalosis), oncology,
cardiovascular disease (cardiac disorders, circulatory disorders),
respiratory disease (infections, allergic, chronic bronchitis, emphysema,

CLINICAL
ASSESSMENT
Mental status. Abnormalities of; head and neck, respiratory system,
cardiovascular system, reproductive system, gastro-intestinal system,
peripheral vascular system, musculo-skeletal system and nervous
system. The physical examination of infants and children.
DIFFERENTIAL
ASSESSMENT
Pain; head, chest and abdomen. anemia, blood loss, haemorrhagic
disease, coughs, breathing problems, palpitations, difficulty swallowing,
nausea and vomiting, jaundice, weight loss and fever.
THIRD YEAR
SEMINAR
The structure of the third year seminar is broadly the same as that
of the second year. Lectures in Materia Medica will cover subjects
presented in the second year seminar in more depth, with an emphasis
on the pharmacological actions of both individual and groups of
herbs. Clinical Assessment lectures will deal with the physical
findings in common pathological conditions, and will cover disorders
of the main systems of the body.
EXAMINATIONS
- Year 3
These comprise written papers in Clinical Assessment, Pharmacology
and Materia Medica.
