The Dominion Herbal College Student Training Clinic in B.C. is the same facility where Ella Birzneck, former president and teacher of Dominion Herbal College, practised as a holistic herbalist for over 30 years. Since 1954 many herbalists, as well as members of other healing professions such as naturopaths, chiropractors, nutritionists and homeopaths have apprenticed with her. After 1987, in Ella's memory the

Clinic remained operating as "The Ella Birzneck Holistic Centre" under the direction of her daughter Judy Nelson, N.D.,D.C.,M.H. It has preserved the clinic's tradition of herbal service, research and development over the years.

Since 1989 Dominion Herbal College has been offering a Clinical Herbal Therapist Diploma Course in B.C.and in Ontario since 1994 thus providing a quality education in herbal medicine both East and West. The students who will be attending in Clinic have been involved in basic science and theory of Herbal Practice and are now ready to begin in practical experience with patients under supervision of the Clinical Director. The Clinical aspect of the students training that has been founded by theoretical knowledge becomes translated into the practice of a professional Herbalist.

New Directions

The clinic supervisors at both clinics have all been carefully selected and reflect the dedication that will preserve Dominion's goal of better health for present and future generations.

The same clinic protocol and standards that were developed in B.C. will be applied in the DHC Approved Clinic in Toronto to ensure that the same high standards of quality patient care and student training are maintained.

Herbal Medicine

Is the foundation of all medicine and has been of service to mankind from ancient times to the present. Hippocrates is known to have used herbs, and Bostock's "History of Medicine" tells us that the Materia Medica of the "Father of Modern Medicine" consisted mainly of plant substances.

Herbal Remedies possess potential power or energy and have inherent properties which the Vital Force can use in the effort to restore the normal function. Herbalists believe that the physical basis of life and all functioning of the living organism is the expression of Vital Force.

Clinic Procedure

Each patient will require approximately one hour for their first consultation. The patient will be assessed by the clinic supervisor or by a student under supervision. Herbal and nutritional requirements are evaluated on an individual basis. A follow-up visit is usually required. There may be 1-3 student trainees observing at any one time.

To provide professional training to student herbalists and thereby:

- promote health

- diminish human suffering

prevent sickness by

administering safe non-poisonous herbal preparations.

- lessen the expense of maintaining health

- encourage enthusiasm about the use of herbs

- for the student to gain

confidence and self assurance as they develop practical skills

- encourage clinical research and exchange of ideas among students, herbalists, patients and other health professionals

- education within the community about herbal medicine

- treat each patient with care

and respect and if necessary refer to other health care professionals
