British researchers have made a significant discovery in the battle against Alzheimer's disease. Scientists at Newcastle and Northumbria Universities made their discovery after reading four-century-old writings of the renowned herbalists John Gerard and Nicholas Culpeper. In 1597, John Gerard wrote that the herb sage "is singularly good for the head and brain and quickeneth the nerves and memory." Then in 1652 Nicholas Culpepper, wrote that: "It [sage] also heals the memory, warming and quickening the senses." On the basis of the writings Nicola Tildesley and colleagues decided to test the herb on a group of 44 adults aged between 18 and 37. The participants were given capsules containing sage oil or a placebo capsule of sunflower oil. Results showed that those who took the sage oil performed significantly bettering memory tests than those who had the placebo. Sage is already being investigated as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease, following earlier work by the same team that showed that the herb inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE). AChE breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays an important role in memory and whose levels are depleted by Alzheimer's disease.

1. Many Chartered Herbalists are employed by health food store, supermarket and pharmacy that have herbal department. Salary range from $8.50-$20.00 per hour depending on location and size of the store.

2. Herbal Consulting Program-Employment opportunity includes health food store, herb shop, herbal product manufacturer, pharmacy, supermarket, or as a private herbal consultant. If working for others salary would be $8.50-$20.00 per hour. As a private consultant you would set your own fee ranging from $25.00-$50.00 per hour for any herbal product your client needs.

3. Clinical Herbalists, usually in private practice, can make from $25.00-$100.00 per hour plus any herbal formula is an individually crafted for client usually $20.00-$80.00 or more depending on size and quantity.

All three herbalist categories are always in demand for speaking engagement in various community events or wellness shows. Average honorarium $50.00 $100.00 per hour. Herbal Schools, nutrition schools, naturopathic schools are always looking for well- trained and knowledgeable person in herbal medicine to lecture and to teach. Salary range from $35.00-$60.00 per hour depending on experience. Some herbalist have gone into business for themselves by manufacturing herbal product such as oil, cream, tinctures, healing salves and herbal cosmetics for other health shops.

Depending on the size of their company they could gross anywhere from $500.00 to $100,000 yearly or more. Above category of herbalists enable you to work within the herbal industry with others or give you the opportunity to become an entrepreneur and go into business for yourself. There are no limits.
